If you know me you may also receive a version of the above that includes a plump delicious baby covered in this very delicious cake.

A few years back, a photo of a baby tarred and feathered with their own birthday cake was one of my least favorite things, ranking only slightly ahead of monkeys in bathrooms struggling with the intricacies of toilet paper.

But then I started smoking teh baby crack.

And haven't looked back.

Actually I have. Am doing it now, in fact. Looking back, that is.

Back to work, me.

As you may know, my mother was a prolific and respected romance novelist, who passed away this summer five years (and six books) after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Today, many of the novelists she knew and blogged with at Word Wenches wrote a special "fairy godmother" post for my Delia. I couldn't read it without crying, but I bet you can. Check it out here.

Related: My mother's final book, finished in March and published in October, has been nominated for RT's Best British Isles-Set Historical Romance.

Introducing... Me & My Spawn

Babble is the world's coolest parenting magazine ever. It just happens to be online. So much the better. Print magazines? Not so good with the moving pictures and new content daily, people.

My baby and I will have itty bitty videos up M-F on Babble.com's newly-hatched vlog blog Toddler Tube.

Why should you visit Toddler Tube now and everyday 1000X/day? Here, let me answer some of your imaginary questions:

Q: I have a baby and I think my baby is cuter than your baby, so why should I watch your baby?

A: Well, I know the hormones are powerful, but I'm sorry to say you are incorrect. My baby is cuter than your baby. Really. It's been proven in a lab. You can't argue with science.

Q: I don't have a baby and I don't like babies and I've no interest in babies and my eyes glaze over when I hear about babies.

A: Well, my videos and commentary will not be dull nor will they be serious. They will be mercifully short and quite entertaining. Also, I was once you, so although I'm now babycrazy, I feel you, people who are not crazy about babies. If you find you are still not entertained, return the unused portion for a full refund.

Q: Refund??? I have to pay to view this?

A: Of course not. That was a joke. The site is 100% free.

Q: OK, so I just viewed Toddler Tube and it's so amazing I want to pay you lots and lots of money. Maybe I should take out a second mortgage on my home to do so?

A: Actually, if you are a private citizen, please refrain from sending us all your money. I have a great job writing and stuff for truTV.com, which features totally insane real-life videos that are so far from babydom you'll get whiplash. Anywho, if you are a huge corporation who would like to pay us a truckload of money to endorse something, have your people call my baby -- here's a blog post that contains a handy list of things Hugo baby will and will not endorse.

Q: Your profile pic on Babble is so cool. Who took it?

A: Actually, I took it, via the bathroom mirror last year when Hugo was infantastic. Life was really hard back then. But this picture might fool you into thinking I was and am ultra cool.

Q: Wow, you're just so amazing. Everything you do is awesome. Can I lick you?

A: Thank you imaginary questioner, you're OK in my book. Wait, lick me? What the--

Q: Nothing.

In conclusion, bite-sized baby video and joy awaits you on Toddler Tube!

Scrabubabe?

On Scrabble's offical website, there is an image that perplexes me:

I would think babies and Scrabble don't mix.

Babies...

...can't spell.

...prone to choking on/flinging letters.

...don't appreciate you concentrating on anything but them.

It says TIPS, but sadly, there are no tips on how to get your baby to enjoy Scrabble!

But the baby is slightly see-through, so perhaps it is a ghost baby. A ghost baby from another dimension. A ghost baby from another dimension who simply docks its knowledge portal to your forehead, wet-wiring the Scrabble dictionary to your cerebellum as seen here:

Data transfer in progress.

Then, the ghost baby smiles and claps its hands as you slay your opponents with words like KA, ES and XU.

OK, that makes sense.

G'night.

1..31.08 UPDATE: I think I've found the babies & Scrabble connection. It's like the Rainbow Connection, but sexier. It's writer/Comedian Jen Dzuria looking Scrabblicious in these stunning photos by Bill Waldman.

I think it's pretty clear, playing Scrabble in this manner, would make Scrabble babies.

Yer welcome.

Happy (early) Valentine's Day

Because true love should never wait...

Monday, October 29, 2007

I've been so busy.

And I'm too busy to explain why so busy.

So why that pic above? Oh. Well while being insanely busy, my boy had a birthday.

His 1st Birthday, so they say, but what about his birth day?

You know, the day that he wasn't born, really, so much as emergency airlifted out of me. The day I met the love of my life, a stranger. The day my husband became my family, and later my hero. The day that caused me to spike fevers and shoot pus from my guts clear across the room. The day that made me crazy, if only for a little while. The day that I added "mommy" to my resume. The day that a floppy thing without a reasoning cortex made me move heaven and earth to have my work, work for my life. The day... you get the picture.

Now, here's more pictures of this "1st" birthday (the Chinese count it differently, but no better). Of all I have accomplished, making my baby's cupcakes -- beating the cream cheese, measuring the vanilla and plopping the batter in the cups -- was one of the best moments of my life, satisfying me on a primal level. Sad. True!

When my husband saw how stressed I was the day before and suggested I "just buy" the cupcakes, I went feral. My lip curled and I reacted as if he suggested we swing with the still-warm corpse of Joey Bishop. He looked, understandably terrified. Sometimes, just sometimes, I feel sorry for men. But then, I put the cap back on the glue.

My love for the bambino is so startlingly great, sometimes I wonder, why didn't we have him earlier? But then I realize he wouldn't be him, and I slam up against the near impossible probabilities that were involved in the making of "him" and I get dizzy and so I know why people just cop out and say "miracle" instead. Or as I like to think of babies now: a consolation prize for death. "Sorry you are going to rot slowly from the inside out, and see your loved ones disappear likes leaves from a tree, but here's a baaaaaaaby! A babybabybabybaby!"

Why the death talk? I can't help it. I guess because my father died in October. It was my favorite month until he went and ruined it for me. When I see the tombstones and the ghosts on your lawn, I no longer think "Yay, Halloween!" I think, "Aint it the truth."

My baby was born in October, which doesn't cancel out the death, it just makes the month the cruelest and the most beautiful all at once. I wish my father had seen "the Bam" as we call him. I am forever looking for my father, like a dog whose dumb stares are frozen in the direction his owner left him.
Weehawken mascot
But I gave the babe my father's ridiculous first name for a middle, and instead of crying (which I am tempted to do often this month) I man up and see I just have to honor him via my life. By continuing, enduring, loving, working. I don't think my father can "see" me now. Wish I did. But I do believe how he raised me -- with love and good sense -- is a flame that can not be extinguished within me. And if I can pass that torch to my baby, I can touch immortality and my father never died. They talk about how abused children become abusers. Well, shouldn't it work the other way round? I think it does.

Anywho, it's been quite a year for me. It has been terribly hard. And the hardest bits were not even things I can or ever will talk about on this blog. Shooting pus is dramatic, but in retrospect, almost braggably cool. Although I and the others who witnessed it thought I was going to die -- it was nothing compared to my worry over my [redacted] and dealing with [seriously redacted] and [redacted to infinity]. But all my friends, family and co-workers (yes, evil corporations? Not always evil, people) who truly helped me and loved me, their names are bedazzled on my heart, etched with glitter pen on the heavens.

Wait, it's my boy's birthday, why is this about me? Well it's my blog. When he gets his own blog he can whine about his life, and his awful mom. And he will. Oh you know he will.

OK, here's the big dismount...

Although it was, sing it with me -- very very, ohmigawd, so very hard for me -- and although if the manifold horrors of X, Y and Z hadn't happened, or if my baby had simply been kind enough to come out the clearly marked exit, I'd have been much better off; here's the horrible truth:

It's really hard for all new moms. Really really hard. Maybe you knew that? I didn't. I was of the "oh get over yourself you had a baby, you didn't cure cancer" school. So I think the fates bitch-smacked me harder for that. And that's OK. I deserved it.

But even with all the problems, I overcame. I appreciate everything more, most days, in between feeling guilty and anxious -- a heady cocktail no mom avoids; or being horrified and shocked -- when the untalented succeed, women get a raw deal or jealous when the rich float above earthly concerns.

Point is, even though life isn't perfect, it's good. And good, is huge. And I wouldn't trade my imperfect life for anyone's, and that's the Thor's honest truth. Life is harder than ever, but I'm going to keep having my cake and eat it too. Just watch me. Trying to work harder, run faster, and know that the impossible is possible. And grace is there for the taking. Yeah, being a mom is like being severely handicapped. Suddenly you can't do 1/1000 of what you did before, but you're like one of those annoying enlightened handicapped people who are like, "Sure, ever since the accident I've no legs and half an eye and incurable halitosis -- but I appreciate life so much more now!"

Yeah, I called some handicapped people annoying. I'm asking the fates to get me right? No! No more, fates! I get it! Get lost!

Speaking of cake (above: me testing yesterday's cupcake icing for the king), maybe I'm just happy that I'M CURRENTLY MORE THAN TEN POUNDS THINNER THAN BEFORE THE BAMBINO WAS CONCEIVED.

All the baby weight, is on the baby. That's probably more interesting to y'all than my kooky year one swansong. So here ya go... and here I go.

My boys made the Court TV blog today: Check it out.
Hang, you've got something on your fur...

Seeing them here? No big whoop.

Finding a way to contextualize and display their cuteness on the corporate site? Genius!

It's fashion week in NYC dahlings. But what's a la mode for the under one set? What's on the catwalk for those who can't yet walk? What's the latest trend in goo-ture? Glad you didn't ask.

News

Reader DSC_0036.jpg
"Ah, what's this? Sez here mom is going back to work tomorrow and leaving me with a stranger who costs more than our rent. Early estimates show that she'll only see me awake for two hours a day. It also says that compared to other working moms, she's lucky."

Boston Globe Reader DSC_0037.jpg
"Say what?"

Susie says: Wish me luck. He's the best thing I've ever done, he's the most beautiful baby the world has ever seen and he's getting more fun by the day. Leaving him makes me feel ill. Yes, it's even harder than eating raw chicken from McDonald's. I'm ga ga head over heels for my Hugo. This from someone who really liked kids but was definitely not a baby person. I know. The pre-baby me is rolling her eyes too.

Susie also says: Maternity leave has been no party. It's actually been the hardest time I've ever had. First I was dealing with an infected open c-section wound (less said the better) and then finding a way to go back to work in the middle of winter (with post-partum hormone wonkiness) has been about as easy as (and as unexpected as) coming back from the dead. This is why most companies are like a bad zombie film, for as you see women disappearing from the workforce you think, "Ohmigawd! They got another comrade!" And this is why families can't help but slip into debt. Heck at least I got some maternity leave and some was with pay. In this country, that's rare.

But half a paycheck is better than no paycheck. Part time work? Sounds great -- Hey you don't go crazy doing baby care all day! You keep a toe in the workforce -- until you do the math and find it would be equal to or less than no paycheck, once you pay for P/T childcare and the commute. Oh and no benefits, natch. Sorry baby, it's St. John's Wort for your cold or nothing.

Oh and that little fantasy you as-of-yet non-moms have about working while the baby is sleeping? Ha! I mean, how nice for you. I had it too. My baby sleeps all night (brag) so that I'm well rested to go all day. He only naps long enough to eat anything that doesn't run away fast enough and regret you didn't do the laundry. That's it. If your baby doesn't sleep all night (unlike my pillar of babydom), enjoy trying to fire up your brain to work when he or she decides to conk out for a brief snooze. If you're able to do more than drool while you watch Oprah, and upload some baby photos, I'll give you a hundred bucks.

Speaking of money, did you know that only $600 of childcare/year is tax deductible and that this amount hasn't changed in about 30 years? I didn't. For my childless and far flung friends: in the NY-area $600 = less than one week to as much as three weeks of childcare. Understand that when I say "childcare" I mean all the possibilities: from nanny/babysitter to decent daycare (4 infants to one adult, and a minimum 12 month waiting list to get in so you have to sign up before conception) to the crappiest daycare where you will want to suicide after you see it. Thanks Republicans! I'll see you in hell.

Disclaimer: Yeah, life is hard. But I've got the most wonderful baby daddy in the world and he has a job. Save your sympathy for chicks with jerks or single moms. How they manage, I've no idea.
